FILTER (PULSE RECORDINGS) SET TO KICK OFF FIRST TOUR IN NEARLY SIX YEARS / NEW CD ‘ANTHEMS FOR THE DAMNED’ OUT MAY 13
As they prepare to release their new CD ANTHEMS FOR THE DAMNED May 13 via Pulse Recordings, FILTER have announced their first tour in nearly six years. The first leg of this U.S. trek--a mix of headlining shows, radio festivals and special engagements--begins April 24 at Stubb’s in Austin, Texas, to be followed by three June shows overseas in Germany and the U.K. Earlier this month, FILTER made a special appearance for the troops in Kuwait when they performed at the March 10 Operation MySpace concert.
While on tour, FILTER will preview songs from ANTHEMS FOR THE DAMNED alongside such FILTER classics as “Hey Man, Nice Shot,” “Take a Picture” and others. ANTHEMS FOR THE DAMNED--produced by Pulse Recording head Josh Abraham--features the first single “Soldiers of Misfortune”; its been one of the most added tracks on the active and alternative radio charts the past two weeks with airplay on stations such as KDGE (Dallas), KTBZ (Houston), Q101 (Chicago), KPNT (St. Louis), WBCN (Boston), KQRC (Kansas City), KXXR (Minneapolis), WEBN (Cincinnati) and WBUZ (Nashvile), to name a few. PATRICK describes the soaring anthem--with its U2/Bowie flavor and stacked backdrop of buzzing electric guitars--as a “sardonic anti-war/pro-troops song.” The first-person narrative was inspired by a letter from a FILTER fan who had enlisted in the Army reserves to get his college tuition paid; in his final year of college, he was shipped off to Iraq where he died from a rocket attack and small arms fire after just a few days of duty.

Misfortunes, the second full length album from This is Hell was released this week. Receiving a deluge of press including Alt Press (quote above), Revolver who proclaimed that Misfortunes was “darker, uglier and more threatening than 2006’s Sundowning” and Absolute Punk.net who called it “one of the essential hardcore records of 2008.” The band is currently on a headlining tour with support from Elysia, Ruiner and guitarist Rick Jimenez’s own side project, Soldiers. Speaking on doing double duty with both bands including vocals for Soldiers Jimenez comments “It’s easier than I thought it would be, we did a two week tour together in Dec and I found that the adrenaline stays up after the first set and having a two band break before This Is Hell is the only break I need, plus I’m a well conditioned specimen (ha ha).”
Going directly from a support slot on the U.S. Gallows and Cancer Bats tour into their headlining run Jimenez welcomes the change. “We had a blast on the Gallows tour playing larger venues but we are looking forward to going back into a more intimate, punk show sort of tour where there are no barriers to deal with, security problems and distance between the audience and us. Plus we look forward to putting the new material right in kid’s faces and have them stage dive, etc.” You can get an example of the band in this setting in a video filmed for the song “Broken Teeth” on their my space page: http://www.myspace.com/thisishell. Filmed at The Chain Reaction in Anaheim, CA, the video shot in grainy black and white is fist pumping, mosh pit intense hardcore action. On the video Jimenez comments “Our friend Mike Tucci came down and just did that video on his own, cutting footage together from different shots, it’s pretty awesome.”
This Is Hell also have a forthcoming UK headlining run in April. For the tour they tapped good mates, Dead Swans to open on which Jimenez says “We met those guys when they were playing in other bands on one of our early European tours. We are into Dead Swans and when the opportunity arose, we were psyched to bring a band that we not only like but who is hardcore and psyched on a hardcore tour.”

Dr. Manhattan will kick off their run with a headlining CD release “festival” on March 7th at Just For Fun Roller Rink, where the band recently filmed their first music video for the song “Big Chomper, Big Chomper.” MySpace.com will be premiering the video in March.
